Introduction of Copper Cables

Copper has been used in electric wiring since the invention of the electromagnet and the telegraph in the 1820s. The invention of the telephone in 1876 created further demand for copper wire as an electrical conductor.Copper is the electrical conductor in many categories of electrical wiring. Copper wire is used in power generation, power transmission, powerdistribution,telecommunications, electronics circuitry, and countless types of electrical equipment. Copper and its alloys are also used to make electrical contacts.Electrical wiring in buildings is the most important market for the copper industry. Roughly half of all copper mined is used to manufacture electrical wire and cable conductors.

Some detail study of Copper Conductor

For certain applications, copper alloy conductors are preferred instead of pure copper, especially when higher strengths or improved abrasion and corrosion resistance properties are required. However, relative to pure copper, the higher strength and corrosion resistance benefits that are offered by copper alloys are offset by their lower electrical conductivities. Design engineers weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of copper and copper alloy conductors when determining which type to specify for a specific electrical application. An example of a copper alloy conductor is cadmium copper wire, which is used for railroad electrification in North America. In Britain the BPO (later Post Office Telecommunications) used cadmium copper aerial lines with 1% cadmium for extra strength; for local lines 40 lb/mile (1.3 mm dia) and for toll lines 70 lb/mile (1.7 mm dia)

  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) — This gives you the ability to power phones, surveillance cameras, Wireless Access Points (WAPs), and many other devices right through the networking cable itself. That means that you don’t have to schedule an electrician in to run power to your surveillance cameras to power them. Another advantage is the ability to have an emergency power supply that will continue powering mission critical devices even if your electricity goes out.
  • Less expensive electronics — If you are going to take fiber to the workspace, realize that most PC’s come with copper NIC cards. Optical ones will cost you between $100-200 each.
  • More Flexible — TDM environments are built to run on copper infrastructures. Fiber can be used, however the electronics that make it work are expensive.
